What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is getting a commission for selling other companies products. The % commission could range from as high as 80% to as low as 1%, and everywhere in between.
Where to Find Products to Sell?
Most companies offer an affiliate program, some handle the program themselves, others go through an affiliate network like ClickBank, ShareASale, or Commission Junction.
The approval process differs by the company, with some companies, you sign up and it is an instant approval, others have to go through an approval process.
How To Find The Right Products
The products should be aligned with your post content. If your post is about craft ideas, you don’t want an affiliate link about email marketing. The link should be a natural flow in your post.
Affiliate networks are a collection of affiliate products from various companies looking to distribute their products through affiliate marketing. One such network is ClickBank.
ClickBank has thousands of products available for you to promote, with commissions as high as 80%. This would add up very quickly if you are able to sell on a consistent basis, especially if you were to sell a subscription type product, where you get a commission for each month based on a one time sale.
The #1 income source for most bloggers online is in fact affiliate marketing income. You are not trading your time for dollars, you are using the passive income model, do the work once, and get paid for it over and over again.
ClickBank is great if you are just starting out because you don’t have to be approved to promote affiliate products. Some other networks and businesses have a manual approval process, so if your blog doesn’t have a high amount of visitors, your account is not going to be approved.
Once you sign up for a free account on ClickBank, go to Marketplace, this is where the affiliate products for promoting are located. Along the left side is the list of categories or you can you the search bar to search for products.
Then sort your listing of products by the Gravity, this is a rough estimate of how well the product is selling, the higher the Gravity the better. Try to look for products with a Gravity of over 50.
Included is a summary of the product listed, some include an affiliate website dedicated to promoting the product. Some may list tips on promoting the products, example email copy, and a pre-written web page for promoting the product.
Below are the stats for the product itself, the gravity number, your stats when you sign up to promote this product, and a list of symbols relating to the features of the product.
When selecting a product to promote, keep in mind the recurring billing model. This means that you not only get paid for the initial sale but each month thereafter, similar to a subscription.
How to Promote a ClickBank Product
To promote a product, click on the red Promote button on the right side. This will take you to a pop-up box prompting you to enter your ClickBank user name and optional tracking ID, to help track your different promotional methods.
Click on the Generate Hoplinks button to generate your own personal affiliate link for this product. The link will look something like this:
You certainly do not want to put this in your post. Fortunately, WordPress has a great and free plugin called PrettyLinks that you can change this long ugly affiliate link to something like http://MyCraftBlog.com/Christmas.
To download this plugin go to Plugins and the left dashboard, then search for PrettyLinks in the search bar, and select and activate this plugin. It also has a built-in click tracker, so you can monitor how many clicks each of your affiliate links are being clicked on.
Another great affiliate network is ShareASale, it has physical products, whereas ClickBank deals more with digital products. Both of these are free to join and free to promote their products, unlike other networks which charge you a fee.
ShareASale has been in business for over 19 years with over 4,000 products to choose from. Once signed up, click on Merchants – Search For Merchants, from here you can click on the Featured Merchants, Catagories, your Favorites List, or you can use the search bar.
Each affiliate product list the website, commission per sale, rank, and 7 day EPC (earnings per click). To begin promoting an item, click on the blue Join Program button.
They also provide plenty of reports of your sales, tools for managing your affiliate products that you promote, and helpful guides to maximize your affiliate income.
